Professor Martin Stokes
We are delighted to announce that Professor Martin Stokes will be giving the 4th Anthropology of Music Lecture Series, which will take place from 26 to 29 June 2024 at the University of Mainz.
The “Master”
Martin Stokes is King Edward Professor of Music at King’s College London. He studied music and social anthropology at Oxford and taught at the Queen’s University of Belfast (1989-1997), the University of Chicago (1997-2007) and Oxford University (2007-2012) before joining King’s College London. He also holds an honorary professorship in the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies at the University of Copenhagen. Martin Stokes’ distinguished writing focuses on popular culture and music in the Middle East and in Europe. His book The Republic of Love: Cultural Intimacy in Turkish Popular Music (Chicago University Press 2010) won the Society of Ethnomusicology’s Merriam Prize in 2010. In his most recent book, Music and Citizenship, Martin Stokes examines the ways that citizenship and citizenly identity are entangled with music.
