15.05.2025 – A unique collection of Malagasy Music at the AMA

Thursday, 15 May 2025, 18:00 at the AMA Lounge (Jakob-Welder-Weg 6, 55128 Mainz)

The African Music Archives (AMA) at the Department of Anthropology and African Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) has acquired the extensive collection of Malagasy Music by ethnomusicologist Ass.-Prof. Dr. Mag. August Schmidhofer. The collection also includes the online presentation Archives Virtuelles de la Musique Malgache – The online archive of Malagasy Music. The transfer of the collection to the AMA expands and strengthens our archive’s research focus on Malgasy music.

To celebrate the newcomers to our collection, the Archive Music Archives invites for a reception at the Gutenberg Campus on 15 May 2025. August Schmidhofer will present his collection in his talk ‘Collecting, researching, archiving – the genesis of a record collection’. The lecture will be accompanied by live music from Malagasy musician Serge Ralamboarison (Frankfurt/Antananarivo).

Organised in cooperation with the Anthropology of Music Research Group and the University Library Mainz.

Supported by the Ernst Wilhelm Müller Foundation.
